Summer-ready: City’s Energy teams tackle substation clean ups across metro

As part of the City Energy Directorate’s seasonal clean up drive and ongoing efforts to protect community electricity infrastructure, the Electricity teams undertook clean-up operations of its substations in Pinati Estate, Mowbray and Melkbosstrand.

‘Our clean ups aim to ensure that our critical electricity infrastructure remains safe, accessible to electricity officials and protected from built-up waste and is part of our summer-ready initiatives to reduce the risk around our infrastructure with the heat and wind typically impacting operations.

‘The energy teams are on the ground 24/7 to ensure our communities are brighter and safer and, ahead of the festive season, we dedicate additional resources to ensure our infrastructure is protected and in a good state, across the metro.

‘To prevent further waste build up around our infrastructure, our teams are looking at all available options to prevent waste and debris from being blown inside of our substation enclosures, where feasible.

‘The City thanks residents for their cooperation and for reporting incidents of electricity vandalism and theft in their areas. Our teams remain committed to protecting all community infrastructure and will be conducting additional clean-up operations in other identified areas across the metro,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg.

The City has spent approximately R62 million in the past financial year on electricity infrastructure maintenance and replacement.

Protect Your Power is a first of a kind campaign which highlights the massive impact of vandalism, theft, and illegal connections that leave our communities, neighbourhoods, and roadways in the dark. The City is calling on all residents to help us Protect Your Power and build safer, brighter communities by reporting any suspicious activity anonymously to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC).
